Mississippi University Can Run Casino Courses

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Biloxi Sun-Herald: "The University of Southern Mississippi can proceed with its casino management program, Chancery Judge Patricia Wise ruled Friday.

"In a 16-page decision, the judge said the state College Board has control over the courses taught at universities, not the Legislature.

"…In April 2004 the board approved a tourism curriculum within the College of Business and Economic Development at Southern Miss. In May of that year, Attorney General Jim Hood said in an opinion that state law 'clearly prohibits' the board from authorizing such courses.

"The court disagreed, saying that when citizens approved amendments to the state Constitution, 'they entrusted the Board of Trustees to manage and control Mississippi's colleges and universities. At the core of the Board's authority and responsibility is the subject matter which is taught at those educational institutions.'…"
