Mandatory standards to clean up online games

The national clean-up against illegal online games is underway: the Ministry of Culture will solicit opinions from the masses from June on the criteria of the examination of online games it drafted; the Ministry of Information Industry and the Ministry of Culture will jointly formulate mandatory standards for the development and operation of online games to force enterprises concerned to make technical adjustments in the game rules that are likely to arouse addiction; a batch of quality games will be recommended to minor citizens in the summer vacation this year.

Along with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Information Industry, Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration of Industry and Commerce established a joint conference for the clean-up of online games. They decided to launch a concentrated clean-up of online games from mid-April to September 1.

The priorities of the campaign are: first, crackdown on online games that contain pornography, gambling, violence, superstition or elements harmful to national security; investigation into overseas games launched without examination by competent authorities; third, clearing of online game providers that have no approval by competent authorities; severe crackdown on infringement upon intellectual property rights and illegal acts disrupting the market order; fifth, strengthened publicity and education to actively guide the public opinion.
